The West Melton Scout Group is based in the West Melton Domain, on West Melton Road, where we have a well maintained Scout Den. The Domain is an excellent area
for outdoor activities.
The West Melton Scout Group was formed on 30 June 1964. Cubs and Scouts began in August of that year, with eight boys in Cubs and also eight boys in
Scouts. (One of the original Cubs was John Wright, later NZ Cricket Captain).
For the first five years of the Group's existence, the Scouts met in an old
building next to the West Melton Community Centre, while the Cubs used the Community
Centre and Domain Pavilion. The Den was opened in 1969 in the Domain, attached
to the southern end of the Pavilion. The Den was extended in 1984 when the
rugby club's former changing room was purchased on the south of the Den.
Venturers began in 1980, and the first Kea Club started in 1986.
Over the years, West Melton youth have participated in many activities: camps,
bike hikes, tramps, expeditions, and also District and Area events: Kea Day,
Cub Day, Kontiki rafting, Gang Show, Trek, Fuller Fire Flag, Campers Cup,
Camporee, Selwyn Safari, Staveley Camp. Scouts, Venturers and Leaders have
attended NZ Jamborees and Ventures, as well as Australian and World Jamborees.
(Four Scouts/Venturers and a Leader will be attending the 2007 World Jamboree
in England).
The West Melton Scout Group is fortunate to have had many leaders and committee
members who have provided long and dedicated service. This has been a major
reason for the ongoing stability and success of the scout group. Our current
keen and able leaders put in a lot of time and effort into running interesting
and active programmes for our youth members. The Group is very well resourced
by the committee.

The West Melton Scout Group recently purchased a 9m x 6m white PVC marquee. This marquee is available for hire by the public and community groups. Please contact the Group Leader for hire details.
